Hardanger Bridge

The Hardanger Bridge is a 2-lane suspension bridge including a 3rd lane for pedestrians. The Hardanger Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in Norway, and among the 10 longest in the world, with a main span of 1310 metres. Design of the bridge was performed as a partnership between The Norwegian Public Roads Administration and Norconsult.

Construction of the Hardanger Bridge was finished in august 2013, after 2 years of detailing followed by a 3,5 year construction period.

The bridge deck is a steel closed box girder. The box girder was produced in lengths of 15 metres, which was assembled to 60 metre sections, before construction. Production of the box girder was performed in Shanghai, China.

The main cables were constructed with air spinning. Each cable is assembled by 10032 galvanised 5.3mm wires. The ultimate load is 2 x 342 000 kN.

The viaduct side spans are 17 and 45 metres respectively, and the deck is a concrete box girder.

The cable anchorage is of a conventional type, with splay saddle and anchorage chamber. The cable is split into 19 single strands supported by the splay saddle. The single strands are connected to the anchorage chamber by prestressing strands.

The towers’ height above sea level is 200 metres, and are placed only metres from the fjord. The pylon columns are concrete box sections, constructed by climbing formwork, using 4-metre sections. The columns are joined by three concrete cross beams.

Simple and robust solutions which require a minimum of maintenance were emphasized during the design phases. The bridge deck and main cables are constructed with integrated dehumidification systems. The stiffening girder has external rails over the whole length of the main span, to support an underhanging wagon for maintenance. The pylons has platforms for inspection by central structural elements. All faces on the concrete pylons are constructed with embedded fasteners for climbing inspections.
