Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Project, Zambia

Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Project (KGL) site is located on the Kafue River in Zambia, a primary tributary of the Zambezi River, 17.3 km away from the existing upstream Kafue Gorge Power Station (Upper) dam site along the river course. Norconsult contract is for Supervision of Design and Construction of the power plant.

Assignment

The total capacity of the plant is 750MW (5×150MW machines) designed to be installed in a fully enclosed and weather proof surface powerhouse complete with unit step-up generator transformers, control room, relay, communication, ancillary equipment etc., a 330kV switchyard to accommodate three out-going 330kV line bays connecting to the 330kV ZESCO national grid.

Solution

Norconsult is providing technical assistance to the client in project management, design review and construction supervision, working with the contractor Sino Hydro to implement International Standards. Norconsult has maintained a continuous presence of 8-10 on-site technical staff during the construction period.
