World Environment Day is a UN day that is celebrated on 5 June each year. Norconsult is encouraging all our employees to mark the day by making environmentally conscious choices.

"Sustainability is one Norconsult’s three main strategic topics in this current strategy period. As consultants, it is important that we give good advice that helps bring about solutions that reduce the environmental footprint from our various projects, as well as utilise opportunities to mobilise both our team and others to make environmentally conscious choices. World Environment Day is an ideal opportunity to do just this,” explains Bente Gjerstad, Senior Vice President Environment and Safety at Norconsult.

Challenging others

The purpose of World Environment Day is to spread knowledge about and generate interest in environmental issues across the world. Norconsult’s sustainability strategy will only succeed if all our employees work together to enable the company to continuously improve our advice on sustainability.

“We are constantly on the lookout for good solutions, and advise our clients to make sustainable choices in their projects. Many of our employees are passionate about making informed environmental choices, and we have seen how young people across the world are mobilising for a sustainable future. Now all we need to do is to go all out and make the best of opportunities like this. We also urge everyone, not just our employees, to mark 5 June,” says Gjerstad.

Norconsult is encouraging all employees to post their environmentally conscious choices and activities on Facebook or Instagram – whether it’s recycling, picking up plastic and rubbish or using environmentally friendly means of transport. We also urge employees to share examples of how they have found more environmentally friendly solutions for our projects.

“While the theme for World Environment Day is air pollution, the activities we share don’t have to relate to this specific topic. The most important thing is that activities inspire change and contribute to the UN’s sustainability goals,” explains Gjerstad. Norconsult is urging everyone to mark the day and join in to help raise awareness.

Beating air pollution main theme for the year

The main theme for World Environment Day 2019 is beating air pollution. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that seven million people die from air pollution each year. In addition, with 90 per cent of the world’s population living in places where the air quality doesn’t meet WHO’s guidelines, it is clear that this is very much a global problem.

Eco-Lighthouse and ISO 14001 certified

Norconsult’s environmental policy is an integral part of the company’s management system, and environmental requirements are incorporated into routines for the execution of assignments in the same way as for quality, health and safety. In our own operations, we focus on measures that can help reduce resource consumption, pollution and waste in connection with our employees’ work activities. As part of our systematic improvement work, our management system is certified to ISO 14001 environmental management and we are an accredited Eco-Lighthouse.
