Norconsult awarded European Leadership Award for Digital Innovation
For its innovative work with gaming technology and entirely drawingless design and construction processes, Norconsult has been awarded GeoBIM Europe’s Leadership Award for Digital Innovation. The award was presented in Amsterdam on November 1st.
The GeoBIM Leadership Awards has been initiated to recognize the hard work and remarkable achievements of organizations that brought advancements to the architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) industry in Europe. The 2018 award winner is Norconsult.
“Norconsult was one of the first companies to enable an entirely drawingless design and construction process in the Hydro Power sector, using digital models in all project phases instead of traditional drawings. Over the past years, this successful innovation has spread into other market areas, further challenging and transforming the industry. Back in 2015, while working on a tunnel project beneath Mount Ulriken in Bergen, Norway, Norconsult used integrated BIM models to create a Virtual Reality (VR) game experience for train operators to “drive” through the tunnel before it was built to help engineers optimize signal placement before construction. The gaming technology has since been used in various of Norconsult’s ground-breaking projects, including the Arna - Fløen tunnel, and most recently the Kristiansand's new ferry terminal. Utilizing VR games in infrastructure design is revolutionary and definitely worth a recognition” says Anamika Das, Vice President – Outreach and Business Development at Geospatial Media and Communications.
Transforming the industry
Mr. Torkil H. Kind, Head of Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), accepted the award on behalf of colleagues in Norconsult.
"I am incredibly proud of Norconsult's talented professional environment that thinks outside the box, first as the foremost supplier of large complex drawingless design and construction projects. Secondly with the use of gamification and VR in projects. In close interaction with our customers and our suppliers, this curious and clever attitude contributes to transform the industry. This prize is a great acknowledgment of the achieved results, and an inspiration for further work", says Mr. Kind.
GeoBIM Europe, a combined geospatial and BIM conference, has been organized since 2014 by the company Geospatial Media and Communications, a media company dedicated to promoting and facilitating growth of geospatial industry across key economic sectors. The objective of the conference is to promote the integration of geospatial technology in construction workflow (covering the entire AECO lifecycle), especially with the advent of BIM and VR in the industry.
