The client bought two earthquake struck hydro plants in poor conditions.
Full rehabilitation of Ambuklao plant and upgrading of Binga plant
The starting point

A strong earthquake

affected the plant's operations.

With a broken intake and powerhouse due to a massive earthquake in 1990, the Ambuklao hydro plant needed a total overhaul.

In 2008, Norconsult was engaged as Owner's Engineer to help SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP) implement civil works and install electro-mechanical components.

"Ambuklao Power Plant"

The solution

We were contracted to undertake design of rehabilitation works, prepare tender documents for both civil works and electro-mechanical equipment.

We also participated in tender activities and construction supervision for the two hydroelectric plants in Luzon.

Prior to the rehabilitation, the power plants had an installed capacity of 75MW (Ambuklao) and100MW (Binga).

After rehabilitation, Ambuklao now operates as a 105MW facility while Binga now has 124.5MW installed capacity.

The result

105 MW

clean energy

With Norconsult as Owner's Engineer, the Ambuklao rehabilitation was completed on-time and on-budget.

Only three years after privatization SNAP has transformed the once largest facility of its kind in the Philippines into a world-class power station delivering 105MW of clean energy to the grid.
